Ahh breaks ... The backbone of nearly all Hip Hop songs in one form or another, and nowadays even pop music! Initially breaks were a drum or percussion break usually found on the intro or middle section of a record, and pioneering DJ's like Grandmaster Flash would use two copies to extend this for the benefit of "break" dancers. Early breaks were found on disco, funk and soul records, but further digging by Dj's and producers revealed beats and breaks on everything from Mickey Mouse to Paul Simon, jazz, reggae, rock, latin and even country and western had the funk! (yes we're talking Kenny Rogers and Billy Swan amongst others ...) The term has broadened slightly now, it could be a chunky eight bar intro, or someone else's sample (you'll often hear people say "have you heard the break to ...."), but it's still basically the same thing, fast or slow, jazz or rock, soul or easy listening, everyone has their own definition of what a tough break is.
Naturally some are harder to find and more expensive than others, for example the Playschool breaks are never going to be as desirable as something like Skullsnaps or Stark Reality (which i've never ever ever ever found!), it just depends on how much loot you want to part with for that four bars or more of perfect sample tool or DJ delight! Happy hunting ...
