What is disco? Watch any I Love The Seventies programme on TV and you could be forgiven for thinking it was a movement led by Tina Charles and Abba in which the participants died from overdosing on glitter and spandex. There was another disco, though. Born in the gay clubs of Manhattan in the late sixties, it was a music that was gritty, soulful, percussive and not bound by either tempo or styles. It revolutionised both the way in which music was promoted and consumed and provided a blueprint for today's modern clubs.
More than that, though, the music was great. In disco's early years, before the majors joined the bandwagon and strangled its creativity with syrupy strings, overproduction and Ethel Merman albums, a disco record was literally anything played in a disco. John Lennon had a disco hit. So did The Ventures. Gawd bless 'em, but so did the Troggs.
It was this sprit of adventure and of open-mindedness that affected the first wave of DJs to be inspired by early pioneers like Nicky Siano, David Mancuso and David Rodriguez. Young DJs like Larry Levan and his friend Frankie Knuckles also played great music irrespective of what colour its makers were or what style of music the press proclaimed it. Larry Levan once told Blues & Soul that his favourite ever record was 'The Magnificent Dance' by The Clash.
Among the selections you'll find here are songs you will know and love and immediately recognise as being disco. There are also records here that will seem strange sat next to them. Don't doubt, though they are also disco, too. Since - to us at least - disco music is merely music that was/is played in discotheques.
